This photograph of a man in uniform driving a truck in New Mexico, was taken by Robert Frank sometime in the mid-twentieth century. I can imagine Frank on the road, camera in hand, trying to get the shot. The image is cropped so that we see only the truck's roof and windscreen, with the driver visible behind the glass. What was Frank thinking when he made this photograph? What did it feel like to be there, to take this shot, with the desert all around? There's a stillness and quietness, and a sense of curiosity about the man. The composition, with its layers of framing—the photograph itself, the truck, the windscreen—creates a sense of looking in or looking out. Painters and photographers often respond to one another. I know I do. We’re all involved in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. This photo is an expression of a particular moment in time.
