This black and white photograph, "Woman with dog in automobile--New Mexico," was taken by Robert Frank at an unknown date. It’s a blurred image, the kind that makes you feel like you’re moving even when you’re standing still. The light in this picture feels like it’s been turned way up and then the contrast cranked over, but there are so many mid-tones. This is the kind of photograph that feels like a drawing. I guess that’s the key - the tones. You can see Frank playing with tone in the blurred horizontal lines in the background. It’s like he's taking a pencil and shading the sky. The woman in the image wears a hat, but next to her in the back seat, a dog is looking out the window with the same expression she has. It’s so quiet, so still. It makes me think of Larry Clark’s photographs. They're both raw, and in a way, kind of melancholic. Is it just me? Anyway, I think what’s so interesting about this is how it makes you feel so many things at once.
