Joseph-Pierre Braemt created this bronze medal to commemorate the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Wilhem Willink and Hester Bierens. In 1825, marking such a milestone spoke to the cultural values of stability and enduring commitment, particularly within the Dutch societal structure. The medal’s design presents a gendered image of the couple: Willink, likely a member of the bourgeoisie, appears with a strong profile, embodying the conventional masculine role of provider and protector. In contrast, Bierens, depicted with softer features, represents the feminine ideal of wife and homemaker. The choice of bronze, a durable material, emphasizes the lasting nature of their union. Yet, viewing it now, we might ask: whose stories are valued in history, and how does the celebration of a long marriage reflect societal expectations, while perhaps obscuring the individual experiences and sacrifices made within the relationship? This medal serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between personal emotions and public expectations.
