This print, made by Jan Gerritsz. Visser, presents a memorial to George Hendrik Laghers. Dominating the scene is the allegorical figure of Faith, identified by the flame above her head. She rests her hand upon the Gospels, signifying divine truth. Notice how the image consciously intertwines earthly and divine symbols. The winged angel and cherubic figures, classical motifs evoking divine protection, flank the portrait of Laghers. These motifs find echoes in earlier Renaissance art, where angels are frequent symbols of divine messengers and protectors. Consider the cyclical nature of such symbols. The motif of Faith, with its roots in classical virtue, reappears throughout history, constantly adapting. The angel's gesture, the open book: all these are encoded with layers of cultural memory, resurfacing, evolved, to convey reverence. The image resonates with the subconscious echoes of similar depictions across time. It’s a testament to the enduring power of symbols.
