Curator: "Brystbillede af en gammel Mand," or "Bust of an Old Man," an engraving by W.A. Müller from 1762, made me think of the Dutch Golden Age. What strikes you most about this work? Editor: Well, the texture achieved with the engraving is really impressive. I am fascinated by how much detail is captured in the clothing and the face using just lines. I'm curious, what do you make of the emphasis on material in this portrait? Curator: The intricate lines indeed give form to the garment – perhaps fur – that the subject is wearing, telling us much about the material reality of the subject’s existence. Consider the labor involved in producing this image. What social dynamics are at play, from the artist to the engraver, the supplier of materials to the print's final circulation? Editor: That's a really good point. Thinking about the materials and production process, I wonder how accessible prints like this would have been? Was it something only wealthier people could afford, thus solidifying the class divisions of the time? Curator: Precisely. Printmaking allowed for wider distribution than painting, but access still hinged on economic factors. Who had the capital to commission, produce, and collect these works? This brings a different meaning to ‘portraiture,’ it’s not necessarily about immortalizing the individual. How does thinking about it this way impact how we see the sitter? Editor: So it is less about the individual's story and more about the economic and social conditions that enabled the artwork to be created and distributed? That is a completely different way of approaching portraiture. Curator: Exactly. And it highlights how artistic creation is inherently linked to systems of power and consumption. Editor: Thanks, I'll definitely be thinking about art more in terms of labor and access now. Curator: And I’ll keep your insightful reflections on textural details and impressions in mind!
