This is the cover and frontispiece of 'Notice sur l'abbaye de Floreffe', a book by M. l'Abbé Toussaint, printed in 1878. The composition is divided into two distinct yet connected realms. On the right, the structured world of text presents a hierarchy of information, beginning with the emphatic declaration of the abbey's notice, down to the printer's mark. This is juxtaposed with the implied content on the left. Here, the frontispiece image is obscured by a semi-transparent sheet, teasing the viewer. A hint of the abbey, maybe, or perhaps an abstract rendering. The contrast of clarity and obfuscation invites the viewer to consider the relationship between accessibility and mystery. The book cover serves as a frame, yet simultaneously acts as a portal, through which an idea or a memory of the abbey can come to mind. The structure of the book thus becomes not just a container of information, but a dynamic interplay between what is revealed and what remains tantalizingly out of reach.
