This Pa. German Bride’s Box was made by Jessica Price sometime before 1995, and it feels incredibly personal. The way the colors are laid down, kind of gently, makes me think about the quiet moments of art-making, that sense of taking your time to get it right. I’m really drawn to the texture here. The colors, soft oranges and creams against that gentle green, feel like they’re breathing. Looking at the lid, I notice how the artist captured this woman. It feels like folk art, but it’s also so much more. The flowers around the sides of the box have so much detail, I like to think about the care taken to paint each petal. Jessica Price, you know, she's not unlike someone like Bill Traylor, but with a touch of something else, maybe a dash of Joseph Yoakum. Art, for me, is about these ongoing conversations, about how we keep building on each other, even across time.
