Here we see Frances Lichten’s watercolor and graphite rendering of a Pennsylvania German cap box. Lichten, who lived to be almost 100, documented Pennsylvania German material culture. These boxes, originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, held women’s delicate lace and linen caps. These caps were not merely functional; they were emblems of a woman’s identity, marital status, and community affiliation. The vibrant folk art adorning the boxes often featured tulips and birds, symbols of love, fertility, and spiritual devotion, reflecting the values of the Pennsylvania German communities. Lichten's work captures this rich visual language. These cap boxes evoke the intimate spaces of women's lives, preserving not just textiles but stories of labor, love, and cultural identity. Lichten’s careful study preserves this part of women's history.
