This vintage photograph captures the Castle of Biron in sepia tones. It’s a small print, which makes me think about how Delizy carefully framed this view, probably lugging all that camera equipment up a hill! I imagine Delizy wanting to capture not just the solid mass of the castle, but the feeling of a place steeped in history. The light seems soft, almost dreamy, making the whole scene feel like a memory fading at the edges. Look at how the trees in the foreground reach up like spindly fingers, framing the castle on the hill. They add a sense of depth, as if the castle is emerging from a landscape of time. It reminds me of the way Corot would use feathery strokes in his paintings to create a sense of atmosphere. Artists are always in conversation with one another, even across centuries. Whether it’s through photographs or paintings, they’re all trying to capture something essential about the world around them. And isn’t that what art is all about, trying to pin down something elusive, something that can only be felt?
