Paolo Veronese painted Saint Matthew with oil on canvas, a common combination in 16th-century Venice. But don’t be fooled by familiarity. The technique he employed here is anything but ordinary. Note the vivid colors and the dramatic use of light and shadow. Veronese built up layer upon layer of paint, each glaze catching and reflecting light in slightly different ways. This creates a depth and richness that’s quite breathtaking. The result is a masterful orchestration of color and light. The folds of Saint Matthew's robes look almost tangible. This effect wasn't achieved easily. The pigments had to be carefully ground and mixed, the layers meticulously applied, and then left to dry. Think of the labor involved, not only of Veronese himself but also of his workshop assistants, who would have prepared the canvas, ground the pigments, and mixed the paints. All this effort elevates it beyond a simple depiction, and into a testament of skill, tradition, and the value of hard work.
