Editor: This is "The Hyena Aunt" by Paulo Tercio, painted in 2014 using acrylic paint. It has such a striking presence. I'm really captivated by its bold figuration emerging from such deep shadow. What symbolic readings can we unpack here? Curator: Indeed. Tell me, what does the title "Hyena Aunt" conjure for you? Consider how hyenas are often perceived across different cultures – sometimes as figures of cunning, survival, or even as guardians of ancient knowledge. Editor: I immediately think of the cackling laughter associated with hyenas and maybe a matriarchal figure who's maybe a bit… mischievous? And perhaps powerful in a way that's not always understood or appreciated. Curator: Precisely. Notice how Tercio uses animalistic imagery blended with human form, all rendered in such stark contrasts of light and shadow. Where do you think these animalistic and humanistic forms converge? Editor: I guess her posture feels very commanding, arms spread wide. The patterned skin on her arms contrasts with the geometric forms of her garments; that's really striking. So the symbols speak to a bridging of worlds maybe? Animal instinct and calculated human actions. Curator: It's about a potent synthesis. That liminal space between worlds can evoke strong psychological responses in a viewer. How does the stark background influence the narrative, in your opinion? Editor: It almost feels like she is rising up from some dark subconscious place. Like a hidden strength emerging into the light. Thank you for pointing that out! I was seeing the figure on the surface but now, through a discussion of symbolism, the shadow has taken on a deeper meaning for me. Curator: And, it’s that interplay between the seen and unseen, the conscious and unconscious, where the painting finds its most lasting resonance. It prompts us to ask: what lies hidden beneath the surface of ourselves, our societies, and our understanding of power?
