Nikos Nikolaou made this painting, titled Figure, with a muted palette that feels almost like a memory. The application of paint is direct, building up the figure in layers. You can sense the artist figuring out the pose as he goes. The painting has a tactile quality; the surface isn't slick. It feels like the kind of painting that invites you to imagine running your hands across it, feeling the slight variations in the texture. The subtle shifts in tone of the nude, from a pale sand to a richer brown, define the form of the figure and create a sense of depth. The artist's hand is visible in every stroke. Look at the contours of the figure; they’re not precise but softly blurred, as if the figure is emerging from the ground. This approach reminds me of some of Guston’s later figures, those pink fleshy piles, except here it’s more gentle, more human. It’s a reminder that art is a conversation across time, an ongoing exploration. And like any good conversation, it’s full of detours, surprises, and open-ended questions.
