This photograph, Bürgenstock, gezien vanuit Vitznau, Zwitserland, was captured by the Wehrli Brothers. It's a straightforward landscape, but it’s more than just a view; it's about how light and shadow play on water, rock, and cloud. The tones are almost monochromatic, ranging from the deep black of the foliage to the soft, hazy white of the sky. Look at the water, how it reflects the sky, almost mimicking it. Then there are the clouds themselves, which are rendered in such incredible detail, they seem to be moving. The mountain looms large, yet it doesn’t feel imposing. Instead, it merges seamlessly with the sky. The choice of such a limited palette is not a limitation, but a strength. Think of it as the Wehli brothers trying to find the extraordinary in the everyday. It reminds me a little of Gerhard Richter's landscapes, but without the blur. Like Richter, they invite us to consider the relationship between photography and painting, and to see the world with fresh eyes.
