Life is Golden 2022

Carrie Graber's painting, "Life is Golden," captures a moment bathed in warm, golden light. I imagine Graber, brush in hand, coaxing this scene into being, letting intuition guide her. She’s thinking about colour. Look how the light pours over everything. What a choice to mute it with the blue of the pool, and that yellow patterned dress – it’s like the whole thing is built on colour. The paint itself looks thin, almost like a glaze, allowing light to bounce around. I love how that arm is placed, like she’s deep in thought. It reminds me of some of Fairfield Porter's interiors, that same sense of quiet observation. Graber is part of this ongoing conversation, echoing and riffing on ideas, each brushstroke a response to what came before. Painting is a form of expression, embracing ambiguity, and allowing multiple interpretations over fixed meanings.
