This woodcut print, "New Year’s Wish with the Christ Child," dates back to the 1480s-1490s and depicts the Christ Child in a red robe, standing on a green and blue landscape. He holds a golden orb topped with a cross in his left hand. Above his head is a scroll inscribed with the inscription "Wif gutr [sic] jariger [sic]." This small, hand-colored print, measuring 77mm in height and 56mm in width, is likely a devotional image intended for personal use or to be included in a book. The Christ Child is portrayed in a simple, stylized manner, typical of the late 15th-century woodcut printmaking style, and reflects the popular devotion to the infant Jesus during this period.
Comments
The invention of printmaking made it possible to disseminate images in large numbers. This stimulated the development of new art forms, such as the printed New Year’s card. Exchanging them became a popular custom, as it still is nowadays. That the earliest examples, such as this one, are very rare is hardly surprising. After all, who keeps all the New Year’s cards they ever received?
