This parasol knob was made from grey and black speckled horn, probably in Europe. I imagine the artist, Gustav Schnitzler, carefully selecting the horn, maybe even feeling the texture of it, running his hands along its surface. It's easy to envision how the horn was gradually shaped, carved, and polished, a slow process of revealing the object hidden within the material. The horn has this kind of warm glow, and the way the colors swirl together reminds me of the marbling effect you see in paintings. The handle itself, with its pinkish-grey hue, adds another layer of complexity. It makes me wonder, what was Schnitzler thinking about when he created this piece? Was he inspired by nature, or by other artists? There's this conversation happening across time, where artists are constantly responding to one another, picking up ideas, and pushing them in new directions. This parasol knob feels like a part of that conversation, a moment of embodied expression captured in horn.
