Robert Frank made this photograph, Mabou, Nova Scotia, with gelatin silver, sometime around 1979. It's a still life, but not really. A vase of flowers on a windowsill, a child's statuette reflected in the glass. The light is grainy, almost brutal. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's photographs; simple subjects made strange through texture and tonality. Look at the surface of the vase; it's almost vibrating with light, and compare this to the inky shadow on the left side. The contrast pushes the image forward, creating depth and tension. There's a melancholy here, too. These are humble objects, but Frank treats them with a strange kind of reverence. It's like he's saying, "Look, this is all there is." A quiet moment, a still life. It's a testament to the power of photography to transform the ordinary into something profound.
