Francois Boucher made this drawing, Cottage with Figures, with pen and brown ink, and brown wash. Boucher lived during a time of aristocracy, his work often reflects themes of eroticism, mythology, and idyllic pastoral scenes. Boucher, known for his decorative Rococo style, presents a seemingly simple country dwelling. But look closer: who populates this scene? Are they idealized peasants, or does their placement within this composition perpetuate certain class fantasies? The figures are placed within the landscape, rather than being a part of it. Note the light and airy brushstrokes used by Boucher, these soften the realities of rural life, transforming it into a picturesque backdrop. Boucher’s artistic choices can be seen as upholding the status quo of 18th-century French society. And yet, there is also a deep, emotional longing for a simpler existence in this intimate portrayal of a cottage.
