Adrie Vürtheim made this pen drawing, ‘Writing Girl in a Nursery’, at some point in her life. It's a dance of black ink on white paper. The drawing makes me think about how she constructed the scene and the figures within it through an accumulation of delicate lines. What's really captivating is how Vürtheim uses these simple, clean lines to define form and space. The marks are confident, yet the overall effect is light and airy, almost like a dream. You can sense the artist's hand in the slightly wavering lines that make up the floorboards. Look at the way she captures the texture of the wallpaper with these tiny repeated shapes. It’s as though she’s inviting us into a world that’s both familiar and strange. Vürtheim’s use of line reminds me a bit of the drawings of Otto Dix, especially the precision. Ultimately, 'Writing Girl' reminds us that art is an ongoing conversation, and that each work offers a new way of seeing and experiencing the world.
