Requena Nozal made this painting, Vitral III, a 50 by 65 cm work, with layers of vibrant colour applied like stained glass. Looking at the surface, I’m drawn to the way Nozal builds up the paint. It's a tactile process, each stroke a record of the artist's movement and decision-making. There's this one spot, a cluster of yellows and greens, where you can almost feel the pressure of the brush against the canvas. The paint is applied in these angular blocks, but somehow they float and bleed together. It reminds me of the early abstract expressionists, like Joan Mitchell, who used colour and gesture to evoke emotion. The conversation between artists across generations is a reminder that art is an ongoing exploration, a dialogue that stretches across time. Each artist brings their unique perspective, their own voice, to the conversation, enriching and expanding our understanding of what art can be.
