This 'Penningdoosje voor de penning ter gelegenheid van de kerstvlucht van de Pelikaan van Nederland naar Nederlandsch-Indië' was made by Huguenin Medailleurs. It's a box, smooth and solid, like something you might find tucked away in an attic. It's boxy, but softened, like a well-loved leather armchair. I can imagine the maker, carefully selecting the leather, maybe thinking about the long journey the box itself might take, mirroring the flight it commemorates. It would have to be sturdy, to protect the treasure within. And the colour, that warm brown, reminds me of old maps and the thrill of uncharted territories. Maybe the artist wanted to evoke a sense of adventure, a longing for faraway lands. I think of other boxes, jewellery boxes, memory boxes, and how they hold not just objects, but stories. This one whispers of pioneering flights, distant colonies, and the dreams of those who dared to cross vast oceans.
