Editor: This is George Cattermole's *Landscape Study* from the Tate collection. It's difficult to date, and done with monochrome media on paper. The turbulent water against the dark landscape is so evocative. What can you tell me about this work? Curator: Look at the rapid application of pigment. What does this tell us about Cattermole's process, and perhaps the intended market for such a work? Was this a study meant for the artist's eyes, a preliminary sketch for something grander, or something else entirely? Editor: I see. So, it's less about the landscape depicted and more about understanding the artist's labor and the art market itself? Curator: Exactly. Consider the value placed on "finished" versus "unfinished" works during this period. How does this sketch challenge those boundaries, and what does that say about evolving notions of art and labor? Editor: That's a really interesting way of looking at it. I hadn't considered the economics of art in that way before. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure. Now you know to consider the means and mode of production when looking at art.
