This is a design for a cross-shaped pendant, rendered by Jan Collaert I in the 16th century. The cross, a symbol laden with spiritual significance, is here adorned with floral motifs, reflecting both divine and earthly beauty. But let us consider the cross itself. Emerging from ancient symbols of intersection and convergence, it evolved into the preeminent emblem of Christianity. Yet, its echoes reverberate in earlier forms – the Egyptian ankh, a symbol of life, or the solar cross, representing the cyclical nature of the cosmos. This cross form, embellished with flora, reminds me of similar patterns from ancient Minoan art, which intertwines nature with symbolic representation, and reappears in more recent illuminated manuscripts. The emotional resonance of such symbols lies in their enduring presence, a testament to humanity's quest for meaning across millennia. The eye is drawn in – triggering subconscious memories of death, love, and rebirth. It's a pattern that resurfaces, evolves, and is laden with new meanings in each age.
