This photograph of the street with a view of the Cathedral of Vienne by Delizy captures a moment in time. It’s a small, square view of the street and the heavy architecture of the old cathedral, its surface aged and toned sepia. You have to think, what was it like to be Delizy, walking around with that big camera box, trying to find a good spot? I mean, did he feel small, or was he trying to do something grand like the cathedral itself? The photograph is kind of quiet, but the cathedral is the opposite, and it has all this crazy decoration like a costume or something. The light is soft, but the details are really clear, you can see all the little sculptures and the windows. I imagine Delizy felt like he was preserving something important, a story being told over centuries. You know, the thing about pictures like this is they show you how everything changes and stays the same, and this mix of old and new keeps me going in my own work.
