Robert Peak made this movie poster called 'Kaleidoscope' with paint and collage. It is all about process, about the layering of different graphic elements, like a psychedelic scrapbook page. Peak throws everything at the surface, like a tumbling collage of found images and painterly gestures. The colours are a mix of acidic pop and fleshy tones that create a kind of chaotic harmony, a lot like when I am trying to resolve an image through a process of trial and error, move and countermove. Look at the hand with the rings. It's so graphic, almost cartoonish, but then there's this amazing textural quality, like you can feel the ridges of the paint. It feels very much like Peter Saul's work, that same sense of humor and irreverence, but with a smoother, more design-oriented sensibility. Art, like a good kaleidoscope, just keeps turning and changing, right?
