Kaleidoscope 1966

Robert Peak made this collage poster called Kaleidoscope. I like to imagine him in his studio, snipping out images and arranging them intuitively. The way he's layered the visual elements creates a super-dense field that is, to me, visually exciting. The combination of images from different contexts opens up a space of imagination around the artwork. It's playful! The title, "Kaleidoscope", it's like he's saying, "Here's a whole world, jumbled up and ready to be re-ordered!" It's fascinating how one piece of collage can trigger so many different associations. The artist throws a bunch of stuff at the wall and what sticks, sticks. And that's the painting.
