This silver medal commemorating a 25th wedding anniversary was created by Martin Holtzhey, a Dutch medalist, in the eighteenth century. The medal depicts Ewout and Adriana van Dishoeck in front of a classical building, an allegory for marriage. The building symbolizes the idealized domestic space. The inscription, encircling the medal, emphasizes the couple’s names and lineage. On the reverse, a monument is flanked by allegorical figures and a lengthy inscription, detailing the virtues of their union. This medal reflects the values of the Dutch elite, emphasizing marriage as a cornerstone of social and political stability. Such medals were commissioned privately. This object functioned as both a personal memento and a public display of social standing. To fully appreciate this work, one might explore family archives and the records of the Dutch East India Company, where Ewout served. These resources offer insights into the social and economic contexts that shaped the lives and values of the Dishoeck family, giving deeper context to this commemorative piece.
