Mrs. de Harven's photographic tryptich, "Drie portretten van een onbekende man, een gezin met een kind en een onbekende vrouw (vermoedelijk) te Congo", was created without a known date, as part of the "Exposition Universelle D'Anvers 1894." These portraits, titled "Types Congolais," encapsulates a complex intersection of colonialism, identity, and representation. During the late 19th century, the Belgian Congo was a site of exploitation. The subjects are positioned within a framework that emphasizes European notions of race and otherness, reducing individuals to mere specimens of a colonized land. This work asks us to consider the power dynamics inherent in the act of photographing individuals from different cultural backgrounds. As viewers, we are compelled to consider the emotional and cultural implications of such images, not only for those depicted but also for how they continue to shape our understanding of this period in history.
