This anonymous photo of the Hervormde Kerk in Oirschot kinda feels like a memory fading, doesn't it? The whole image is swathed in this dreamy sepia, which to me suggests artmaking as a kind of excavation. Check out how the light delicately grazes the brickwork of the church; it’s almost like the building is exhaling. The texture seems rough, aged – you can almost feel the grit of the old mortar. There’s a stark contrast between the solid, weighty base of the building and the almost ethereal upper reaches, where the steeple seems to dissolve into the sky. And the windows! Those arched windows, with their gridded panes, feel like eyes peering out from another time. This piece isn’t just about a building, it’s about the passage of time. It reminds me a bit of Atget, you know, how he captured these soon to be lost corners of Paris. It is a conversation that transcends time.
