This is a colored version of "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," a woodblock print made by Katsushika Hokusai, who lived from 1760 to 1849. It's part of a series called "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," which is interesting when you consider that Fuji appears almost as an afterthought, a small triangle dwarfed by the immense wave. Hokusai's work emerged during a time when Japan was opening up to the world, and there's a tension in his prints between traditional Japanese art and the influence of Western styles. This piece shows how the natural world can feel both overpowering and sublime, reflecting a human struggle against forces beyond our control. The wave is about to break and swallow the boats below. It is easy to feel the precariousness of life, and the ever-present possibility of change.
