This stained glass detail, by Ludovic Alleaume, is from the Église Saint-Sulpice de Fougères. Look at the way the artist uses colour to create depth and form. The angel’s robe appears brown at first glance, but up close, you can see a network of red lines and small circles covering it. The light coming through the glass gives it a complex texture; the artist wasn't just trying to depict something, but was also interested in the materiality of the glass itself. The angel's left wing is a perfect example of this. The artist is creating an image, but also acknowledging the unique qualities of the medium. This reminds me of the work of Pierre Bonnard, who also used colour and light in really evocative ways, and how both artists share an interest in the way the materiality of the medium can shape our emotional experience of the artwork. Ultimately, art is an ongoing conversation. It's about embracing ambiguity and multiple interpretations, not just fixed meanings.
