This untitled drawing by Alevtyna Kakhidze, maybe made with felt-tip pens, shows us a little scene, very sparse, but full of suggestion. The directness of the mark-making here gets right to the point; the artist is not trying to fool us with fancy technique, instead, there is something very honest about the simplicity, like a conversation. The black lines create the figures, while touches of red and green give us just enough to suggest a world. Look at the way the artist draws the hands, like little rakes. There’s something very matter-of-fact about it. I find myself reminded of work by artists like David Shrigley. There is something quite profound in its seeming naivety. It’s this openness to interpretation that makes the work so interesting, you know?
