Adolphe Burdet made this photograph, 'Plant on the Balcony,' with a camera and a whole lot of light, capturing a world of subtle hues. The way the tones melt into each other feels very painterly to me. I'm drawn to the way the soft lavender petals of the plant contrast with the sharp geometry of the window behind it. There's a tension there that gets me thinking about the way we frame nature, or even try to contain it. And the light! It seeps through the leaves, creating a shimmering effect that feels both real and dreamlike. I can almost feel the warmth of the sun on my skin. Looking at Burdet's photograph reminds me of the interiorscapes of Pierre Bonnard, who like Burdet was interested in how light and color could evoke a mood, a feeling, a memory. Art is always about these kinds of conversations, isn't it?
