This is Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig’s preliminary design on paper for a stained glass window, intended for an insurance company in Rotterdam. Nibbrig was working at a time when the Netherlands was undergoing significant social and economic changes, with industrialization reshaping urban landscapes. The design evokes a sense of both tradition and transition. Nibbrig employs a classical, arched structure but seems to hint at a more modern aesthetic within. The inclusion of such artwork in a commercial space could be a statement on the values of the company. How does the depiction of labor or industry within the window reflect or challenge prevailing attitudes toward work and social class? Nibbrig's approach invites us to consider the roles of labor, capital, and identity within the context of early 20th-century Dutch society.
