Schets van een persoon 1708 - 1781

This is ‘Schets van een persoon,’ or ‘Sketch of a Person’ by Pieter Idserts. It’s a delicate drawing done with pen in gray on paper. Idserts lived in the Dutch Republic during a time of significant social and economic change. The enlightenment ideals were spreading, influencing art and intellectual thought. In this sketch the faint, almost ghostly figure in the right hand square, invites us to consider identity and representation. How does one capture the essence of a person with just a few lines? How much of our identity is visible, and how much remains hidden? Consider the absent figure in the empty square on the left, perhaps mirroring the incomplete nature of any attempt to fully represent an individual. It serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in portraying identity, urging us to look beyond the surface.
