Lewis Baltz made this photograph, Night Construction, Reno, using gelatin silver. There’s something really stark in the way Baltz lays out the bare bones of a building against the night sky. Look at how the black and white tones interact – the way the wooden frame almost glows against the dark, mountainous backdrop. The textures are so palpable, you can almost feel the rough-cut wood and the gritty earth. There is a lot of attention to line. It’s all about the geometry. What I find compelling is how Baltz captures this moment of transition. It reminds me of Ed Ruscha’s photographs of empty parking lots or gas stations. Both artists share a vision for the mundane, the spaces in between, and the beauty in the unfinished. Ultimately, this photograph invites us to contemplate the ephemeral nature of our built environment. It's a moment frozen in time.
