Curatorial notes
Julie de Graag created this woodcut, "Vaas met bloemen", printed on paper. De Graag lived during a period of significant change in women's roles in society, as many women were beginning to participate in artistic and professional fields. The still life became a way for female artists to express themselves and to subtly challenge traditional gender roles within the art world. "Vaas met bloemen" seems to embrace a subdued commentary on the domestic sphere. Her compositions often feature ordinary objects, elevating them to a level of artistic significance and reflecting the intimacy of domestic life. De Graag's stylized approach to the woodcut print is an emotional and personal statement that invites viewers to consider the beauty and complexities of everyday life.
