Curatorial notes
Gesina ter Borch made this watercolor and pen drawing of a milkmaid in the Netherlands in the 17th century. Here, the everyday becomes art. Ter Borch used traditional drawing materials to create a scene of rural life. Yet, the way she depicts the milkmaid, with her wooden yoke and heavy buckets, invites us to think about labor. Notice the weight of the buckets and the way the yoke distributes the load across her shoulders. You can almost feel the strain of her work. While seemingly simple, the drawing's significance lies in its attention to the details of everyday life and the social context of labor, elevating it beyond a mere depiction of the Dutch countryside. It challenges distinctions between fine art and craft, inviting us to appreciate the skill and artistry in both.
