This is a painting of a deer, a crane and a bat by Suzuki Kiitsu, an artist from the Edo period in Japan. In Edo society, Kiitsu occupied an interesting position. As a member of the samurai class who trained with artists from other schools, his art reflects the blending of social identities characteristic of the period. Here, Kiitsu references traditional artistic motifs, like the deer, crane and bat, which represent longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture. However, Kiitsu develops an alternative narrative through his unique composition. Have you noticed how the deer, crane, and bat are grouped together in an unusual way? The result is a striking image which captures feelings of harmony and balance. As you stand before this work, consider how Kiitsu skillfully uses conventional symbols to create a composition which feels deeply personal.
