David Ligare created this painting of a still life with candle sometime after 1945. He uses clear, almost photographic realism. This recalls the Dutch still life paintings of the 17th century, where candlelight often signified mortality. Ligare updates that tradition, combining it with a contemporary sense of space and composition. Note how the candle sits in what appears to be an architectural space, perhaps a window. Beyond is a flat, calm sea. This juxtaposition of interior and exterior space creates a strong sense of isolation. Is the candle a symbol of hope, or of something fading? To truly understand Ligare's work, one must research the institutions that have supported and exhibited him, such as the museums and galleries specializing in contemporary realism. One should also compare his works to others to truly understand his contribution to the language of art.
