Evangelist Johannes after 1534

This small woodcut print, "Evangelist Johannes," depicts Saint John the Evangelist sitting with an eagle perched on his shoulder. The image is characteristic of the early 16th century, with its emphasis on detail and the use of strong lines. Saint John, who is known to be the author of the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation, is often associated with an eagle, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The print was made sometime after 1534 by an anonymous artist and is now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
