Bramine Hubrecht produced this drawing of a funeral procession using brush in brown and black ink. The sketchiness of the artwork conveys the solemn atmosphere of the funeral service. The work depicts a cultural ritual and shows the relationship between death, religion and community. These themes were especially relevant at the time, as rapid social changes transformed the role of religion in Dutch society. Hubrecht's choice of subject matter, focusing on the rituals of everyday life, links her to the Hague School of artists. She was taught by some of its leading members. However, as a woman artist she was excluded from its institutions and is now under-recognized in its history. Historians draw on a range of documentary sources to reconstruct the significance of the artwork and the artist's intentions. This enables a deeper understanding of the social and cultural context in which art is made.
