Bramine Hubrecht made this drawing of a funeral procession in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, using ink and brush on paper. It’s all about the materiality of the ink, that wet, runny stuff, and how it moves on the page. See how she's used washes to create these blurry figures? It’s all about capturing a mood, a feeling, rather than specific details. The figures almost seem to dissolve into the background, like memories fading away. Look at the pallbearers in the foreground, they're hunched over, weighed down by the coffin. The dark ink is so thick here that it’s almost sculptural, a physical representation of grief. It's a painting about the feeling of painting, the feeling of the funeral, the feeling of loss, all at once. The work reminds me a little of Käthe Kollwitz, or even some of the later work by Paula Modersohn-Becker. It's this idea of art as something raw and immediate, something that embraces imperfection and ambiguity.
