This invitation to the Künstler Verein Böllen, created in 1888 by Lorenz Frølich, is rich with classical imagery. We see putti, floral garlands, and musical instruments, all bathed in a delicate, ethereal light. The cherubic figures, reminiscent of Renaissance art, evoke a sense of innocence and beauty. Yet, such figures trace back to ancient Roman art, where they were symbols of love and desire, connecting to the human experience. We see them again and again, such as in Rococo paintings. These motifs touch something deep within us. The persistent return of such images might be explained by the Jungian concept of archetypes. They act as powerful, subconscious forces that engage viewers on a profound level. The cherubs, seemingly innocent, trigger buried memories and universal feelings of love, beauty, and nostalgia, showing us how art speaks beyond time.
