Eugene Bartz made this "Fireman's Helmet" sometime in the 20th century using watercolor and graphite. It's so process-oriented, you can practically see the artist figuring it out as he goes, which is so relatable. Looking closely, the graphite lines create delicate textures that gives the helmet a sense of weight and presence. I am drawn to the way the light hits the top of the helmet, how Bartz allows the watercolor wash to pool, creating darker accents. The red trim gives this otherwise somber work a little zing! There's something about this piece that reminds me of Charles Demuth's precisionist watercolors. Bartz brings a similar clarity of vision, but with a gentle, almost naive touch. It's a reminder that art is always in conversation, echoing and reinterpreting ideas across generations.
