Théophile Alexandre Steinlen created this work, "Brief aan Ninon," using crayon and/or lithographic crayon. The lithograph is divided into two distinct registers, each employing line and space to evoke different emotional and narrative contexts. In the upper register, the sepia tones and the soft, blurred lines create an atmosphere of urban ambiguity. The scene features a figure absorbed in reading, set against a backdrop of indistinct buildings and street lighting. The composition, framed as a scene within a scene, draws us into the intimate world of the reader, yet remains detached through its hazy depiction. In contrast, the lower register presents a sketch of a couple in blue, their forms defined by quick, economical lines. This juxtaposition of detailed environment above and sparse figures below sets up a visual dialogue about observation and representation. Are these sketches independent studies, or do they function together to invite broader interpretation? The lack of resolution resists closure, suggesting that meaning is not fixed but always in formation.
