Petrus Johannes Schotel created this print of ‘Zeeslag in de Sont, 1658’ - or the Battle in the Sound - sometime in the 19th century. Schotel, who specialized in marine art, invites us to witness a critical naval engagement between the Swedish and Dutch fleets, which happened in the Øresund channel, a narrow waterway between Sweden and Denmark. This was a period of intense maritime conflict. Control over waterways had enormous implications for trade routes, colonial power, and national sovereignty. The battle itself was part of a broader struggle for dominance in the Baltic Sea. The Dutch Republic, itself a relatively new nation, sought to challenge Sweden's growing power in the region to protect its commercial interests and maintain access to vital trade routes. Through this lens, Schotel’s print becomes more than just a historical record; it's an illustration of a nascent nation’s fierce determination to defend its place in the world. It also makes us consider how national identities are forged through conflict, and how control over waterways shaped the course of history.
