Karl Sandhaas made this pencil drawing, "Junger Bauer mit Pfeife, an einem Tisch sitzend", which translates to "Young Farmer with Pipe, Sitting at a Table", sometime in the first half of the 19th century. Sandhaas, who lived from 1801 to 1859, came of age during a period of significant social and economic change across Europe, particularly affecting the peasantry. The drawing gives us a glimpse into the identity of a young farmer during this time. The details of his clothing, the pipe, and the hat suggest a man who identifies with the traditions of rural life, yet is also aware of a changing world. Sandhaas neither romanticizes nor vilifies his sitter. There is a sense of quiet dignity, a sense of a person pausing, perhaps contemplating his place in the world. The young farmer is caught in a moment of reflection. The pipe could symbolize contemplation, or it may simply be part of a daily ritual. This invites us to consider the stories of individuals whose lives were deeply interwoven with the land.
