Henri De Graer created this self-portrait using etching techniques. The composition strikes us with its layered representation: a portrait within a portrait, reflecting the artist’s gaze upon himself. Notice how the linear precision of the etched lines defines the form, giving shape to his features and clothing. The marks create a rich visual texture. De Graer uses the semiotic system of signs to interpret the visual components and cultural codes which may have informed the artwork's making. The self-portrait destabilizes established meanings, values, or categories. Note the detailed rendering of his attire, particularly the hat and suit, which suggest an attention to personal presentation and artistic identity. The subtle contrast between light and shadow indicates depth and volume. Through a network of signs, De Graer constructs a visual representation of selfhood, inviting us to consider the artist's role.
