This 18th century, circular, wooden relief, likely carved in the Netherlands, depicts a cherubic Bacchus astride a subdued eagle. The eagle’s head is turned to the side as if looking away from the young Bacchus, who appears to be either holding grapes or a bunch of flowers. Bacchus is the Roman god of wine and revelry. The intricate, carved, Rococo-style foliage surrounding them is reminiscent of the lush greenery and abundance associated with Bacchus and his revels. The relief likely would have been created as an ornamental element for a piece of furniture or interior design.
