Curatorial notes

This bronze door knocker was made by Tiziano Aspetti around the turn of the 17th century. It's a striking example of the sculptor's art, but it's also an object deeply embedded in the culture of its time. The knocker’s form – a muscular figure flanked by snarling lions – is typical of the Renaissance, referencing classical antiquity to convey power and status. Bronze casting was a laborious, expensive process, involving skilled artisans and specialized workshops. The level of detail, evident in the lion’s manes and the figure's anatomy, speaks to the maker's virtuosity. But the decision to invest all this work into a humble door knocker is especially revealing. It elevated a utilitarian object into a display of wealth and taste, subtly reinforcing social hierarchies. Aspetti transformed base metal into something precious, demonstrating the transformative power of craft and its connection to social aspiration.
